At a time when the Wall Street Journal claims that “every company is now a tech company,” traditional corporate sectors require leaders who have a deeper understanding of technology's impact on the future of business. To address this market demand, Northeastern University's D'Amore-McKim School of Business is offering a new Full-Time MBA degree concept: MBA x Computer Science.

This innovative, interdisciplinary program is designed to give students a comprehensive framework in business and leadership combined with technical knowledge and skills in computer science. It is a natural fit in the Northeastern University networked ecosystem of learning that emphasizes what it means to be “human” and strives to leverage technology in a world where intelligent machines are only expanding what's possible.

“Breakthrough technologies, including robotics, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and blockchain promise higher productivity, enhanced efficiencies, and economic growth,” says D'Amore-McKim Dunton Family Dean Raj Echambadi. “These technologies are changing the way we live, learn, produce, and consume content, as well as how employees and enterprises work across all industries. Advanced business education is a critical component in helping people and industries navigate challenges with digital convergence and turn them into opportunities.”

Recent enhancements to the Full-Time MBA curriculum allow for this adaptation due to the reduced core class structure and an emphasis on interdisciplinary learning. Students in the MBA x Computer Science track will choose one concentration in business and one concentration in computer science thanks to a partnership with Northeastern's Khoury College of Computer Sciences, and they will also complete a corporate residency – a distinctive component of the Northeastern MBA program that is the hallmark of graduate experiential learning.

Current MBA business concentration offerings include AnalyticsCorporate Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Healthcare Management, International Business, Leading People and Organizations, Marketing, and Supply Chain Management, and MBA computer science concentrations include Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Data Science, and Software Development.

“Our college is committed to the idea that computer science is for everyone,” says Khoury College Dean Carla Brodley. “Corporate leaders have seen the convergence between their core businesses and high tech, and now Northeastern will offer a rigorous MBA degree that makes this connection transparent.”

The MBA x Computer Science program is enrolling for Fall 2020. Interested applicants with undergraduate degrees from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. While no prior computer science, computer engineering, or related technical background is required, students without a related undergraduate degree will need to complete a series of foundational courses, co-created by D'Amore-McKim and Khoury College, prior to full-time enrollment. These courses will be comprised of an additional 16 credits to be taken the year prior to enrollment in the MBA program, and those who complete them successfully will be eligible to enroll in the MBA x Computer Science degree.

“Business and technology are now intertwined, and to master a skill set in both areas will set our students apart and set them up for success,” says D'Amore-McKim Associate Dean of Graduate Programs Kate Klepper.
