D’Amore-McKim School of Business Distinguished Professor of International Business and Strategy Paula Caligiuri was recently given the Applied Science Award from the Institute for Cross-Cultural Management. The honor is in recognition of her outstanding application of scientific principles to the advancement of international business practice.
“My overarching goal is to create and disseminate my academic knowledge in a way that can be useful for my academic colleagues, students, business decision makers, and policymakers alike,” says Caligiuri. “I am honored to receive this award from an organization that shares this commitment.”
Caligiuri has been studying what it takes to succeed globally for decades, identifying qualities that distinguish those with cross-cultural competence. She is the founder and director of the Cultural Agility Leadership Lab, D’Amore-McKim’s corporate-sponsored international volunteerism program in partnership with the National Peace Corps Association. Her research examines how participants build cultural agility through these volunteerism programs.
“D’Amore-McKim is the home for thought leadership on how to develop cross-cultural competence in current and future leaders,” says Caliguiri.
With more than 60 global firms having revised their approach to the selection and assessment of international assignees based on her research and recommendations, Caliguiri continuously shapes the business sector’s process for developing culturally agile professionals. Cross-Cultural Management Founder Richard Griffith quickly recognized these powerful and valuable contributions Caliguiri makes to both the business and academic world.
“I kept coming across the name Caligiuri associated with these rigorous, insightful studies, and when I first met Paula I was astounded at her ability to translate that science into common sense conversation that could be applied to solving real world problems,” said Griffith. “Unfortunately, that kind of translation is a rare skill, but Paula is the best translator I know!”
