Case Study: Business Acumen to help Execute the Revised Strategy

The Client:
 A well-respected global brand-name consumer electronics manufacturer and retailer.

Business Need:
 Technology changes, aggressive new competitors, and compressed product timelines were putting severe stress on the firm’s profits and growth. Middle managers, previously exempt from strategy execution pressures, quickly needed to build new skills to make urgent contributions.


Solution:
 We worked with the client to structure a customized Graduate Certificate in Business Leadership, using four MBA courses that would build the necessary global business knowledge. The courses addressed the global business environment, managing global supply chains, finance for non-financial managers, and business-to-business marketing and selling.


Of Note:
 A thorough and appropriate communication across the company, delivered jointly by Northeastern and the client, resulted in all 35 available seats in the first cohort being filled. The Graduate Certificate will grant 12 graduate credits that can be applied to further Northeastern study. In addition, the client’s tuition reimbursement policies covered nearly the entire cost of the Certificate for each participant.


Case Study: A Planned Sequence of Management Development

The Client:
 A 150 year old industrial / electronics products firm HQ’d in Connecticut, with a revised strategy to re-position itself as a competitive global provider.

Business Need:
 Northeastern’s first work with this client was to build GM-level strategic leadership skills among a global group of fast-tracked VPs and Senior Directors. The CHRO had previously described deficiencies in the vital people management skills of the Senior Manager group that were limiting the pace of change and commitment to the renewed strategy.


Solution: 
The key content was arrived at rather early; the challenge was how best to work with a global audience of 32 with widely ranging English skills and business cultures. We decided on a heavily experiential approach capped with a half-day of implementation-focused planning with their Executive Leadership Team.


Of Note:
 The workshop ended with a multi-stage, team-based business simulation as its culminating experience. Participants mixed frequently in functional and regional teams to build and deliver solution presentations to the Executive team about current issues/opportunities in their business. This program was rated by participants at a 4.9 on a 5-point scale for “My personal experience in the program” and 4.7 for “Overall relevance to our firm”.
