"The MSF program at D’Amore-McKim prepared me well for my current position as it helped me gain the knowledge and aptitude needed to excel in the investment industry. From the courses to the professors, the experience was great."
Q:What do you do in your current job/what are your responsibilities?
A:I am a portfolio analyst for a long-only equity institutional asset management firm with approximately $6 billion in assets under management. It is a small firm, we are currently 20 people, and as such I get involved in many aspects of our operations and work closely with everyone from the firm’s traders to the portfolio managers. My responsibilities include performing analysis on our portfolios for reporting purposes and internal use, preparing our marketing and client service materials, keeping up with trends in the market and economy, writing market commentary for clients and prospects, and various client and prospect communications.
Q:What skills did you build in the D'Amore-McKim MS in Finance (MSF) program that you are applying at your current job?
A:The MSF program at D’Amore-McKim prepared me well for my current position as it helped me gain the knowledge and aptitude needed to excel in the investment industry. From the courses to the professors, the experience was great. I think being able to accurately and precisely articulate my views through presentations and class discussions prepared me for a job where communication and attention to detail is critical.
Q:What would you say to a colleague considering enrolling in the MSF program?
A:If a colleague asked me about the MSF program at D’Amore-McKim I would have only positive things to say and I would recommend it for anyone looking to build their knowledge and expertise in Finance.
Q:Why did you choose the D'Amore-McKim MSF?
A:I chose the program for the academic excellence known at Northeastern University, as I knew the University focused on a more practical application in its course work, which was appealing to me. Being able to participate in the 360 Huntington Fund, a student managed mutual fund, was another selling point for me.
Q:What was your biggest take-away from earning your MSF at Northeastern?
A:My biggest take away was getting to meet and work with a diverse set of people. I made some great friends and expanded my network while attending D’Amore-McKim and I learned that a degree is not the end of learning, but that you have to stay hungry and willing to learn even after leaving school.
Q:Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years?
A:In 5-10 years I will hopefully have stepped into a more senior role at my firm working in client services while leveraging my research capabilities.
